Causes of Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

- Blog Post by Tamas Das

Normally many bacteria reside in an healthy vagina. These bacterial help in restricting the overgrowth of harmful bacteria and hence prevent bacterial vaginosis. The normal bacterial flora consists of lactobacillus group bacteria.

The pathogenetic bacteria include gardenerelia, mobiluncus, bacteroides, mycoplasma, etc. A change in the bacterial number of good bacteria in vaginal results in decreased protection power and bad bacteria overgrow. These bad bacteria cause a rise in ph of the vaginal environment which essentially becomes alkaline. The alkaline medium in return enhances the further growth of bad bacteria and sets in a vicious loop on worsening bacterial growth unless checked by natural defence mechanisms or by talking medications.

Some common conditions causing bacteril vaginosis are like rubbing of cloth against the anus and vagina. BV is more likely to occur in sexually active females than the virgins.

Condoms may provide some protection but there is no solid proof of it anywhere. Although it may be related to sexual activity, however its spread is not by sexual route. BV may sometimes affect virgins after menopause, or those who are diabetic, or iron deficient patients. In pre-pubescent girls, BV may be caused by streptococcus group of bacteria, or due to unhygienic conditions.
